Adoption is a life altering event for you, your family, the child and the placing parent. When thinking about adoption there is a lot to think about. There are different types of adoption. You will be asked if you want a closed or open adoption. In a closed adoption there is no contact with the birth family. This is a more outdated adoption option. An open adoption allows for contact with the placing parent. This helps the child better understand their adoption story, and later on in development their identity. There is also domestic and international adoption. International adoptions are much less available than they were a generation ago due to stricter regulations and placing countries less wanting to place infants up for adoption. International adoption still takes place but it is usually with older children. Depending on the country older is 2 to 15 years of age. Finally, there is adoption from foster care. Each state has their own rules ad regulations. The more you know the better prepared you will be in making a decision for what is best for growing your family. This is why it is extremely helpful to discuss the intricacies and needs of adoption prior to making decision and then having resources once you adopt to support all members when challenges arise. I was the chief clinical officer of a not for profit adoption agency and spent over 10 years working in the NYC foster care system.
