Walking and Talking Therapy

Walking and Talking Therapy

I do a style of therapy called walking and talking or walking forward. This also makes me a licensed clinical social walker! I learned while working as a mental health professional in an adolescent group home that more work and healing happened when we would walk around the block, or shoot basketball. There was something in the movement that helped people relax and allowed them to open up. Some of it was the rhythm of movement. When people have a hard time expressing themselves walking takes the intensity of being in a room and feeling the pressure to talk. It is easier to let go of emotions when in motion. It helps the mind relax to both express itself and see other possibilities. There is also a level of mindfulness when in nature. The smell of the grass, the color of the leaves, the feel of the wind or weather around. All these sensations help to release emotions and de stress.

We read about its benefits all the time health and fitness articles and more and more in mental health research. Nature helps stimulate the mind body connection. It relaxes us. Think of how busy and pressured you feel in your life and at work. Then imagine a walk in the park, moving through different landscapes all provided to make you feel less stress. Movement helps the brain releases hormones known as endorphins to help us feel good. Nature is about change, just think of the seasons as they change you so can you. All this can lead to a positive therapeutic experience. You do not have to be stuck in the life you are living or the negative feelings you might experiencing. Let nature help create a new perspectives and open pathways to see new positive possibilities.

Often my clients like to use a combination of nature, and zoom and when working together to help you move forward into the life you want.
